NE Purpose

National Education is an important part of our holistic education. We aim to develop national cohesion, cultivate the instinct for survival as a nation and instil in our students, confidence in our nation's future. It also emphasises on cultivating a sense of belonging and emotional rootedness to Singapore.

The 6 NE messages are:

Singapore is our homeland; this is where we belong.
We treasure our heritage and take pride in shaping our own unique way of life.

We must preserve racial and religious harmony.
We value our diversity and are determined to stay a united people.

We must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility.
We provide opportunities for all, according to their ability and effort.

No one owes Singapore a living.
We find our own way to survive and prosper, turning challenge into opportunity.

We must ourselves defend Singapore.
We are proud to defend Singapore ourselves, no one else is responsible for our
security and well-being.

We have confidence in our future.
United, determined and well-prepared, we have what it takes to build a bright
future for ourselves, and to progress together as one nation.

Core Events

NE Core Event

Total Defence 2016

Theme: Together We Keep Singapore Strong

The theme for Total Defence Day (TDD) is Together We Keep Singapore Strong. TD 2016 aims to strengthen our resilience as a nation by reaffirming our shared attitudes, values and instincts as a nation; borne out of our collective will to continue keeping Singapore safe, secure and special, and  celebrating our common identity as Singaporeans; rooted in a strong sense of self, and committed to building a cohesive society ready to face the future together. These will strengthen every Singaporean’s pride and confidence in Singapore at the start of the next 50 years, and the belief that everyone can play a part in different aspects of our defence.

3 BIG IDEAS- Identity, Relationship, Choices

Pupils can enhance their understanding in Social Cohesion and Harmony through National Identity, which involves knowing the Singapore heritage and culture, and how it has influenced our unique way of life. Understand about Nation Building through knowing the 5 pillars contributing to the Total Defence of Singapore and understanding how one can demonstrate commitment and play a role in the Total Defence of Singapore.

International Friendship Day 2016

Theme: ASEAN

The theme for International Friendship Day (IFD) is ASEAN. Singapore works with our ASEAN neighbours for peace and collaboration in the region. As we are part of this community, we need to develop our cross-cultural skills and relate to one another respectfully and effectively. We need to remain open to international flow of trade, ideas and talent which is critical to ASEAN’s growth as a region, and Singapore’s continued success as a nation.

3 BIG IDEAS- Identity, Relationship, Choices

There are inherent geo-political realities that Singapore faces and pupils need to understand that strengthening the ASEAN identity through our cultural, economic and geographical ties with our neighbours, is a key means for Singapore to ensure our security. It is thus important for us to continue to work on maintaining good relations with our neighbours, and not take it for granted. Pupils need to develop cross-cultural skills and a global orientation so that they can relate to people from different backgrounds and cultures respectfully and effectively. Being an active member of this community, they can make informed choices to actively contribute to ASEAN and beyond in meaningful ways.

Racial Harmony Day 2016

Theme: Our Cultural Heritage

The theme for Racial Harmony Day (RHD) is Our Cultural Heritage. Taking pride in one another's cultural heritage strengthens our collective identity. This contributes to building a resilient community which is vigilant and in times of crisis, responds decisively, recovers quickly and emerges stronger as one people.

3 BIG IDEAS- Identity, Relationship, Choices

Pupils learn the importance of making choices that promote and advocate inter-cultural understanding, which build strong relationships between people of all races, cultures and nationalities, and strengthen our distinctive identity as Singaporeans living in multi-cultural Singapore.

National Day 2016

Theme: Building our Singapore of Tomorrow

The theme for this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) is “Building our Singapore of Tomorrow". “Building” implies that nation-building is a continuous endeavour and that the journey towards our future can be realised with hard work. “Our Singapore” invokes in Singaporeans a sense of belonging and rootedness to the country and our future. “Tomorrow” is forward looking and connotes the start of the next chapter post SG50. Taken together, the theme is a call to action for Singaporeans to build our future together.
